Cross-Cultural Small Business Wins Retailer of the Year Award at 2019 Made in Montana Tradeshow

Major and Michelle Robinson of Sage & Oats Trading Post

HELENA, Mont. – Helena business Sage & Oats Trading Post and its owners, Major and Michelle Robinson, have been honored by their peers as the 2019 Made in Montana Retailer of the Year.

Each year, Montana retailers are nominated by their peers in communities across the state to receive this prestigious award. This year, there was overwhelming support for Sage & Oats.

Lt. Gov. Mike Cooney and Department of Commerce Director Tara Rice presented the award to the Robinsons at the Made in Montana Tradeshow reception on Friday.

“Major and Michelle truly represent what it means to be Made in Montana members,” said Lt. Gov. Cooney. “Sage & Oats is a small business success story itself, and it’s also a wonderful showcase of the authentic American Indian products being made by artisans and other producers across the state.”

The Robinsons opened the business last year and shortly after joined the Made in Montana program. Major is an enrolled member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, and Michelle is Scotch Irish. Their store celebrates the different cultures represented in Montana and features Native American, Irish, Scottish, Scandinavian and Asian products.

The Robinsons have supported locally made products and Native American industries for more than a decade. Sage & Oats Trading Post is the culmination of a long-held love for Montana and the producers that operate here.

“After living on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, we’ve seen so many artists,” said Michelle. “The challenge for them was getting their product to market. Finding ways to bring native artists to the forefront has become the driving force for us. With our store, we are able to work with native and non-native Montana producers to make their products more available to consumers.”

Other award winners included Ladybug’s Cabin of Bigfork for Best in Show Overall, Hindu Hillbilly Farm of Alberton for Best in Show Honorable Mention, and Soil Diva of Billings for Best New Exhibitor.
